Adult Sunday School

Sunday School Class Times:

Friends In Christ
In the Webster's Unabridged Dictionary, the meaning of the word "Serendipity" is as follows: "The gift of finding valuable or agreeable things not sought for." This meaning could well be applied to the "Friends in Christ" Sunday School Class, which encompasses both singles and married in the 30-45 age group.

We gather each Sunday morning at 10:00 to study God's word, using the New International Version of the "Serendipity" Bible, and in so doing, we find within our discussions many valuable and agreeable things not sought for, which may be applied to our everyday lives.

Our monthly socials include a wide variety of activities, ranging from video scavenger hunts, to pizza parties, to father-son touch football games cheered on by those of us not quite so athletically inclined. Many of our activities are geared to involve children, while some are of the adult only variety.

Once or twice a year we sponsor a fundraiser, with the intent of aiding causes within the church and/or the local community, but find that we derive even more from the fellowship and spiritual benefits we reap. "Friends in Christ" is our name; learning, having fun, and aiding others is our aim.

We invite your participation in our class as well as any or all of our social functions, so come and join us. If we have piqued your interest, please contact class member Pam Jackson via E-Mail at tpmlr5@aol.com, or teacher Arlis Enburg by phone, 788-7196 for additional information.

Fellowship In Faith
In the early 1990's the "Fellowship in Faith Class" formed to meet the needs of men and women in the middle of raising families and careers who desired to do those things in a godly manner.

About twenty members get together on Sunday morning to gain a better understanding of Bible teachings and how to incorporate these lessons into everyday life. Using a variety of study material, each person is encouraged to join in the discussions so that members may learn from each other, too.

Contributing to the Christian Family Care Center is an ongoing community project for the class. Proceeds from the annual "Pizza and Karaoke" night, sponsored by the class each October, provides the main donation for this charity.

The class holds social outings at the end of each month to allow members to get to know each other. The class is a diversified group with interests in everything from the Mallards to motorcycles.

Friendship
The Friendship Class is a group of Christian men and women, mostly born between 1930 and 1950. The class has been a fixture at First Christian since 1959. We include married couples and single, divorced, and widowed people.

We enjoy each other's company, and really love the good food that's always featured at our monthly social gatherings. We support various causes, including the church summer camp program.

We share an hour in the Parlor each Sunday morning studying the lessons of the Bible, with an eye to finding salvation, learning to be a servant of Christ, and developing those talents that been given us "on loan from God." The older we get, the more we realize we're works-in-progress -- God isn't done with us yet!

Seven is said to be "the perfect number", and coincidentally, that's the number of our teachers. Paul Stewart has been teaching us for most of our life as a class. Now he is a "first among equals" with the addition of six other members who take turns a month at a time and bring different backgrounds, points of view, and approaches to teaching.

Out of 35 members, we average about 20 present in class each Sunday. We still have room for you! Want to have some fun, learn the scripture, and find an opportunity to serve? Join us on Sundays in the North end of the Parlor. If you want to find out more about us, contact Paul Stewart.

Golden Circle
The "Golden Circle Class" was organized in 1940 as a newlywed group, and has progressed over the years to a mostly retired group of "Senior Citizens". The golden wedding band, a continuous circle, which represents love, caring, and sharing your life with someone, is how the class got its' name, "Golden Circle".

Bible study is held every Sunday morning for 45 minutes in the Jerry Hall Study, with lots of class discussion and participation on understanding the Bible better.

Over the years the class has had many outside activities and fundraisers. This has allowed everyone to accomplish their goals of worship, friendship, charity, and working together to help others, as well as helping the church grow stronger and better. Thus we have grown not only "Spiritually", but we also have learned how to love, enjoy, and care about our fellow man, and are there for them in times of need as well as joy.

We meet once a month, on the 2nd Friday, in the church, or have summer picnics outdoors. Our class has fantastic cooks, and their motto has been "No Eating, No Meeting!". Come and join in the fun and fellowship.

Loyal Disciples
The Loyal Disciples Class (formerly called The Loyal Married People and Builders Class) has been in existence longer than any other class in our Sunday School. We have been a viable class since the 1920's. In its heyday it had over 100 members. Now the members number only a few, but they made a tremendous impact on the church when they were in their twenties and thirties. They put on plays, held dinners, and worked in many ways to pay off the mortgage on the church building. In September 2006, the class was renamed Loyal Disciples.

The Builders Class is a child (so to speak) of the Loyal Disciples Class. The younger members of the Loyal Disciples Class felt that they would prefer a class of their own. They were also a very active class and made many contributions to the work of the church. Both of these classes had a warm, caring relationship with one another and this carried over into the life of the church. This has not changed down through the years.

The classes have only been a combined class for a few years now in the context of the number of years of their existence. We still take part in the life of the church as our energy lets us. We take our commitment as servants very seriously. Our women work together in the CWF, some prepare the communion, at least one ushers, and some work on lap pads for the day care center. We have started a new project of praying for our missionaries. We have obtained a brochure woth information on our missionaries and their various projects and problems. We choose two and concentrate on them for a month, then we move on to two more. The class is very good about keeping track of those who are no longer able to attend, and calling or visiting them.

We meet every Sunday morning in the south half of the parlor. Unlike the other classes, we are meet at 9:30 AM. We are a friendly class and love having visitors or new members. Our teacher's name is Shirley Nelson. An interesting bit of trivia about Shirley; her grandfather used to teach the LMP Class many years ago.

If you are interested in learning more about us, call Shirley Nelson at (309) 794-3037 or call the church office at (309) 762-8889.
